COVID-19 UPDATE

As we transition from emergency based dental care to our regular services, I wanted to take the opportunity to share with you the changes we have made to improve the care we will provide to our you at your next visit to Waikiki Dental. In many ways the modern dental office is really a model of sterile and safe care. While treating patients in the new era of COVID-19, some new challenges were presented. We are solving those issues with a mixture of new technology and new protocols to provide the safest possible environment.

As new research is being release about how COVID-19 spreads and is killed we are closely monitoring the CDC and California Department of Public Health to improve our protocols. Due to social distancing, we have modified our appointment times, scheduling protocol and staffing.

We ask that our patients wear a mask to their appointment, as this is the best possible way to protect yourself and those around you, and is currently mandated by the California Department of Public Health. Please call the office when you arrive in the parking lot for your appointment. The office will call you when you are ready to be seen. We will have patients wash their hands, brush their teeth and rinse with mouthwash followed by hydrogen peroxide rinse, as this has been shown to be the most effective at reducing the virus. You will also notice a new touch-less administrative experience. You will receive a text message or email after booking your appointment with a link to a HIPPA secure cloud based system. This will allow you to update your information, dental insurance and health history, and updated consent forms. Treatment plans and their costs will be sent via test or email for your digital signature. Payment can be touch-less with Apple-pay, or as simple as putting your own card into the credit card machine, where no signature is needed for cards with chips.

We have implemented several new pieces of technology in the treatment rooms to help provide the safest care. High speed air filtration units with medical grade HEPA filters will change out the air every 15 minutes. Upgrades to our central HVAC ionize the air making all contaminant particles heavier and easier to trap in our new upgraded filters. High speed suction systems chair side reduce aerosols by over 90%. We will be using ozone and UV light to further sanitize and decontaminate, in addition to our regular use of hospital grade wipes for all surfaces. All team member will be using face shields and those in treatment rooms will be wearing N95 masks for all aerosolizing procedures. We will be regularly cleaning all contact surfaces with both medical grade wipes as well as a bleach solution recommended by the CDC.

While we have only been providing emergency based dental care, it is now time to invite everyone back to continue their routine dental care. We will be calling all of our patients to continue their treatment that was interrupted by COVID-19. This includes orthodontic care, dentures/ partials, crown and bridge work, and fillings that were postponed. We are now open for cleanings and implementing an online scheduling portal so patients can find the day and time that works best for them.

This is a difficult and challenging time for everyone, and we appreciate your patience as we resume operations. It has been personally very rewarding to have been providing the emergency care to our patients and has in many ways renewed my love of dentistry . I look forward to seeing all of you soon!
